Cleaning the weather stripping

Often, one of the most overlooked and neglected areas when cleaning your windows is the weather stripping. Weather stripping becomes clogged with sand, grit and debris from rain and airborne particles. To remove dirt from the weather stripping, all you need is baking soda in a dish with a little water and an old toothbrush. Dip the toothbrush in the dish, place on the weather stripping and move toothbrush back and forth horizontally to remove all the debris from the weather stripping. After the weather stripping is cleaned, the bristles will return to their original state and be fully efficient in performing their proper function in the sealing of your window.

Cleaning the drainage hole covers

Now that you’re finished cleaning your weather stripping, it’s a good time to go outside to check that your drainage hole covers are free of any dirt and debris. Using the same toothbrush or any rag and a bit of water can usually clean away any debris from your drainage holes.

Vacuuming the screens

To remove dust from your screens, use your vacuum cleaner with a furniture brush attachment.  Vacuum the screen horizontally on both sides to remove any dirt. Make sure you vacuum the tracks as well.

Cleaning the track

Once you’ve removed the dust or debris from the tracks, spray Fantastic on a cloth and gently wipe the tracks to remove any excess dirt or stains

Applying 3 in 1 OIL

At some point during the long life of your windows, you may find that you are hearing a whining noise when you open or close one or both of the sashes of your Double Hung Window. This can happen if you live in areas where there is a lot of dust in the air. This is not a design flaw with your window and is easily corrected with some regular maintenance. Unlock and slide both sashes up and down about 8 inches, so that you can see the steel, spiral mechanism on the side of each sash. Using 3-In-1 Oil, squirt one drop of the oil on each of the spiral mechanisms. Repeat to ensure both sides of the window are done. Now open and close the sashes, up and down, several times to fully lubricate the spirals. Any whining noise should immediately cease. If not, repeat the above steps.
