Insist on seeing samples with labels on them!

Be very wary of contractors whose window samples do not have a CSA and ENERGY STAR label actually on the sample you are viewing, no matter what their performance claims are! Let's face it, if the manufacturer has passed the test with high ratings, he will want you to know it and will have nothing to hide! It is not unheard of for an unscrupulous contractor to verbally quote the specifications that apply to the one and only product in their line up that has a decent rating, while showing you a totally different product!
Compare Apples to Apples
Particularly when it comes to glazing, be careful to compare apples to apples. Beware that some companies have only managed to qualify for ENERGY STAR with their triple glazed products... and unfortunately compare the energy ratings of those triple glazed products to their competitors ENERGY STAR qualified double glazed windows.
Read the CSA Label

Chose the style of product that is right for your home and the way you live. Then compare only CSA CERTIFIED windows. You should look at the label to confirm the A B C and ER ratings. In all cases the higher the number, the better a window will perform.
Keeping it simple...
A is for the Air Infiltration Rating (on operating windows only)
B is for protection against moisture penetration
C is for strength of the frame and sash

Most companies that have good ratings aîso showªtheir Energy Rating (ER) on their CSA label but it is not compulsory. Lastly, always ask for the certified ratings on Condensation Resistance (how cold¢can it get before condensation forms) and for Forced Entry (how¢well will it stand up to a burglar). <Ø>
