Deposits
You don’t often hear this in a “How to shop for” list, but when it comes to buying windows and doors the financial stability of the company you deal with may just be the most important item on the list! A reputable contractor will have established good credit with his suppliers, so when he orders your new windows or doors from the manufacturer, he will not have to pay a deposit …so why should you?
Unfortunately there are no government licenses required for window and door installation companies. It is easy and very inexpensive to set up business as a home improvement contractor and when things are booming, even the little guy will get enough work to keep his head above water. But every year, especially during the winter, hundreds of home improvement contractors go bankrupt leaving homeowners who have paid big deposits on the hook. It pays to investigate! NEVER pay a penny up front, and if you are dealing with a contractor who is buying windows and doors from elsewhere, ask to see a paid receipt for the specific products that are going in your home, BEFORE you pay! Most homeowners do not realize that an unpaid supplier could put a lien on your home!
Ask for references and whenever possible do business with a name you know, a company that has been around for a long time and as always, when you are buying an installed product, you should try to deal directly with the manufacturer! Remember a “Dealer” is not the manufacturer, and even if the manufacturer’s logo is all over his advertising, they are separate entities. If the Dealer goes out of business you may well have a warranty on the product, but you will have no warranty on the installation! And unfortunately that’s when the buck passing begins!
